As the cold winds wane and the sun begins to shine it could only mean one thing. Summer is here again and better yet another Kenya Exiles season approaches. As we embark on the dawn of a new season, morale is high especially with
the addition of coach Theo Bennet and several key fresh players from Kenya including the likes of Zeddy Akwanyi and Dan Weku. And lets not forget our seasoned vets Leslie Mango, Richard Mulaha and Tony Ongoro but to name a few.
With the increase of players participation we are going to attempt to enter two sides per tournament.

Elvis Sevens 2006 Summary
Saturday, 12 August 2006 15:14    | Written by Kenya Exiles
Elvis Sevens saw the emergence of the new Kenya Exiles defensive strategies which were introduced by incoming coach Justin “ Theo “ Bennett. Always a tourney that has seemed easy until the knockout phases where the superior play of the more powerful teams emerge.

The preliminaries saw Kenya post the following scores Kenya 38 Baton Rouge 0 Kenya 33 SLUTS 7 Kenya 29 Silverbacks 7

The quarters were the beginning of the main cup quest which was already looking very bright with the brilliant defensive displays that the team had shown thus far through the day.

Kenya faced the home team in Memphis blues who were very determined to stay in contention, but the Kenyan side proved to fast and technically sound for them to win out on an overall score of 24-12

The Semis saw kenya face the strong and hard running St Louis Bombers, who they edged out 19 – 0 to move into the finals and set up the game everyone wanted to see, Kenya vs Elvis at the Opry.

The finals kicked of with both sides showing no signs of breaking until the try scoring opened with Elvis at the Opry scoring the first try of the game at the stroke of half time.

The half time saw more pressure from Kenya who put in their first through Richard Mulaha on an isolation move that he used to his advantage and took his opposite number at wing , England under 21 wing Scott Taine down the touchline to the try line to tie the game.

Kenya went up again from a swell worked move from the backs to free up Mulaha again for his second try and this put Kenya up 12 -7. With 2 minutes to go, the long day and fatigue started to show as the Kenyan lads began giving elvis a little room to work their moves and this proved to be the difference as elvis at the opry were able to notch up two tries and win out 17-12.

It must be noted that all who came out to grace this occasion saw the best defence Kenya exiles has shown since its inception 5 yrs ago. Much of this can be attributed to the services of former Australian assistant rugby coach Justin Bennett who created a defensive strategy that proved to work very well all through the tourney. We hope that this is the beginning of a long relationship as the team and coach were heard in deep discussions on their 2007 that might include a trip to Safari Sevens and the island of fiji. Post tourney activities were organized by Rahatele Ent, who held a dinner in honor of the team at the DWB bar and restaurant. Players were awarded medallions and speeches were given by the hosts representative Eric Otiende, Kenya Exiles director Thomas Walgwe, Kenya Exiles Vice- captain Leslie Mango and Coach Justin Bennett.

To all the fans who came out we say Asante and we will be back again with a stronger and better performance.

Next up is our Annual Dinner to be held on September 1st at the Kenyan Embassy in DC from 6 pm to 10.30 pm.

Please check back on the website for details on RSVP for the event.
